At daytime rehearsals, and in the evening and on Sundays playing the tourists. Those where the last two weeks in a nutshell. Java is a beautiful island, at least in Yogyakarta and its surroundings, because I stayed there recently. What I particularly like to ‘Jogya’ the most, are the tens of thousands of scooters. This is due to the dozens of colleges and universities, and the fact that these students prefer it more to sit on a motorcycle than on the bus. Besides that you have to drive at the left side of the road, there are not many rules in traffic. Driving with three cars side by side on a one lane road, or with four family members on one scooter, appear to be very normal things. Even though it’s off course a enormous luxury that a private driver is driving me around all the time, I’m very glad I’m not behind the steering wheel …!

The movie

About the content of the film I can unfortunately not tell too much (because the details change per day). However, I can say that it takes place between 1940 and 1950, which means the period of the Dutch oppression of the Dutch East Indies, invading and taking over by the Japanese in World War II (including the ‘Japanese camps), the return of the Dutch army and the beginning of the independence of Indonesia. A very important part of the Indonesian and Dutch history, making it very important to me that this movie is made. The director, however, focuses not on the violence with the standard war-shooting scenes, but on the human side of the story. You see the backgrounds and cultures of the different characters, and therefore the viewer better understand why they are forced to make certain choices.

Cultural differences

Working in Indonesia is very different then working in the Netherlands. For example you have the tropical temperature, three times per day rice with chicken (or a combination of it) and a difference in mentality. It’s apparently not normal in the Indonesian culture to say no or to disappoint people. Therefore, it often happens that when I have a question, I get ‘maybe’ as answer, while they really not know the answer. Very polite, of course, but sometimes difficult in communication, as you understand after two days later that the answer was ‘no’, hihi. In addition, you should not expect that if you should be at rehearsals at 9:00 in the morning, that you will actually begin at 9:00 in the morning. Perhaps ‘maybe’ half an hour later someone will give you a scene, and until then you have to entertain yourself with a cup of tea and … well, anything you can imagine. As a scheduled Dutchman it was a little hard the first few days to get used to it, but it also appears to have its advantages. 1) it is better for your rest (not stressful) 2) it’s great for creativity. Because the director lets himself always be inspired by the moment, until the last moment the script can be changed, and the part of my character in the film now doubled. Next week we start with the recordings, I was told not to be surprised when we will still take it easy during filming by-improvising … So exciting, but I  say, bring it on!
